Why wear gloves? Simply put they add beauty, elegance and distinction to Your ensemble and that of your Wedding Party. Gloves also have a practical side and add an element of comfort as they are great at absorbing perspiration, especially while in a receiving line or your special dances when all eyes are on you.
Who should wear gloves? Typically the style and type of wedding should govern the decision. Gloves are appropriate for all, but the most casual of weddings and may be worn by your Bridesmaids, Maid of Honor and Mothers of the Wedding as well as Flower Girls.
Which style gloves should I choose? In general, the longer the sleeve the shorter the glove. Opera gloves end above the elbow, typically 16-23 inches in length from the tip of the fingers and work well with sleeveless or strapless gowns, including the full skirted strapless Ball Gowns. For the fuller upper arms or shorter arms the Opera gloves are still a good option as they look very elegant pushed down and softly scrunched around the elbows having a more slimming effect.
Elbow gloves fall at or just above the elbow and work well with short sleeve or sleeveless styles for both Brides and Bridesmaids. This length will work with shorter gowns as well as full length. Mid-arm gloves fall between the wrist and elbow. They work well with most bridesmaid gowns and are a good choice for a fuller upper arm or shorter arms.
Wrist gloves typically end at the wrist and look best with a shorter gown, such as a ballerina length gown or a full length gown with sleeves. Wearing wrist gloves can also add a subtle effect with a voluminous strapless Ball gown as Jacqueline Kennedy did at her out door wedding in Newport, Rhode Island. This is also a good length for your Jr. Bridesmaid or Flower Girl.
Fingerless styles typically come to the mid arm to longer lengths and give and equally formal touch to your ensemble with the convenience of not needing to remove them during the ring ceremony or meal. If your gown is very ornate simpler styles are a good choice. If you are wearing a simple classic sheath you may choose a pair with more adornment.Ring Opening styles are available in styles that range from very simple to the very ornate in colors that match the most common Bridal Gown colors.
Mousquetaire gloves have an opening at the wrist that is large enough to slip your hand out with ease. While open the fingers of the glove are tucked inside under the wrist. The opening is kept closed with three buttons when it is not needed. This style originated in the Victorian times for women who did not want to remove their gloves to use their hands for eating etc. Do gloves have to be the same color as the gown?
How do I match the glove to my gown? Gloves are available in many colors that are chosen to blend well with todays Bridesmaid and Bridal Gown colors. If your goal is to match the gown color, aim to choose the color that most closely matches the gown color. Because the fabric of the gloves will differ from the gown fabric, your goal should be for blending or complimenting the gown. If you are looking for a pop of color or an accent of color, you can simply choose the color that best works with the gown color. There is no Right or Wrong here.
When do I wear my gloves? The Bride wears her gloves as she enters the church or synagogue and down the aisle. At the point that she hands her flowers to her Maid of Honor she will take her time and remove her gloves and hand them to her maid of Honor as well. Or she may opt for fingerless gloves or gloves that have a ring opening so that she may remove the ring finger from the glove sot hat the ring can be slipped on. She may choose to put the gloves back on before taking her flowers to exit down the aisle. After all, no one will be leaving before the Bride is ready!
